Barbara Elaine Smith (B. Smith) Dies at 70

 

 

The legendary B. Smith has died “Heaven is shining even brighter now that it is graced with B.’s dazzling and unforgettable smile,” Dan Gasby wrote.

B. Smith begin her career as a model with Ebony Fashion Fair, she was the first African American model featured on the cover of Mademoisellein 1976. She went on to to have a career in televison on her syndicated show on “B. Smith With Style“.  She owned multiple restaurants.

Smith’s interest in design led to the  the development of her first home collection, which debuted at Bed Bath &Beyond in Spring 2001. She also launched a line of serveware and  debuted her first furniture collection with the La- Z-BoyB. Smith authored three books  B. Smith’s Entertaining and Cooking for Friends, B. Smith’s Rituals and Celebrations , and B. Smith Cooks Southern Style (2009).  Smith and her husband Dan Gasby released Before I Forget in early 2016, detailing their journey following her diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s.

In 2014, Smith revealed that she has been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer disease, stating that she came out with the information to counter the stigma associated with the disease. On February 22, 2020, Smith died of early -onset Alzheimers disease at the age 70.
